Donkey History Museum

When I saw the brochure for the Donkey History Museum at the campground, I was intrigued. There's a museum dedicated to donkey history? They have free admission? Is this primarily a collection of donkey knick knacks that someone had? It was only a 45 minute drive from the campground, and friends had recommended a Mexican restaurant in the same town. So off we went. This time we remembered the time zone difference between Utah and Nevada.

We spent maybe an hour in the museum, which is probably more than most people would spend. There were indeed a number of display cases of donkey knick knacks. However, the museum had more to offer, educating visitors of the role of the donkey as beasts of burden. Mining, war, and everyday remote area living, are examples of how the donkey has been used throughout history.

The museum is closely associated with Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue, a nonprofit organization that attempts to do what it says, to rescue donkeys from neglect or abuse and provide a sanctuary or set up an adoption.

Snow Canyon State Park

We had planned to hike nearby Elephant Arch. However construction at the road to the trailhead entrance thwarted our plans. Quite a few folks had recommended Snow Canyon State Park to us. So, off we went to Snow Canyon.

Clambering on the slickrocks (petrified sand dunes) trail, we met a volunteer trail steward. He said that he only lived a couple of miles from the park and that he hadn't been to Bryce or Zion in over five years, primarily because of the crowds. Well, with the stunning Snow Canyon State Park in in backyard, we could see why.
