The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park. I would have thought it would be something like Yellowstone. However the Great Smokys are easier to reach and up until 2023 have been free. In 2023 the park service is initiating a parking fee.
Even in December and January the clouds and mountains look amazing. We drove around Cades Cove, Newfoundland Gap, and the Foothills West Parkway. We've heard that the 11 mile Cades Cove Loop can take 3 to 4 hours at peak times. We were quite glad not to have to fight that kind of traffic or vulture for parking spots.

The Foothills Parkway ends at the Tail of the Dragon. It's not part of the national park, but we weren't going to miss the opportunity to drive it. We're counting it even though we're not on motorcycle or in a sports car. Everything was closed and we think we saw about 20 cars the whole time - and no motorcycles. We were quite glad that we were almost alone on the road.
