We backtracked to Wasilla AK, from Glacier View. We still hadn't explored the Kenai Peninsula. Since we were way too early for our check-in time, we stopped by the Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry. There we found a couple of things that brought smiles to our faces. We liked the mini-bike with skis and had a chuckle at the duct tape moose. I had to send photos of the old road graders to my brother who works for the Virginia DOT.
The next day we drove up to Independence Mine State Park with intentions of making the loop through the scenic Hatcher Pass. We ended up doing an up and back since fog obscured enough of the view that we decided against the dirt road. Independence Mine offered tours through a couple of buildings, assisting in the glimpse of a gold-mining town. The trivia bit that fascinated us was that cooks were so valuable, they were offered first-class travel accommodations when coming to AK. School Teachers were also offered better accommodations.
We also spent some time making repairs to some woodworking trim. A piece of my plastic dish drainer had slid under the cabinet. When we ran the slide out, the plastic piece got caught between the roller and the cabinet. Ugh! Annoying as it was, we were grateful it wasn't a mechanical problem that caused the damage.
After leaving Wasilla, we stopped at Joint Base Elmerdorf Richardson for an overnight. We stocked up on groceries at the commissary and stopped by the only Newmar dealer in the state of AK to purchase some new windshield wiper blades.
Then it was on to Homer, AK, for a few days.
