Mt. Rainier National Park

May 15, 2024

We left the Olympic peninsula and made our way to Holiday Park on Joint Base Lewis McChord. Harold thinks this may be our new favorite military campground despite the low branches overhanging the single-lane road to get to our site.

The forecast called for a sunny day. We decided to make the two-hour trip to the visitor center at Mt. Rainier National Park. It wasn't the distance that took the time. It was the long stretches of winding road with speed limits of 15 - 35 mph. It was a beautiful drive, and we weren't in any hurry.

The road past the visitor center was still closed. Reflection Lake still had 10 ft of snow per the ranger at the information desk. So after eating a light lunch at a roadside pullout, we opted for the Carter Falls hike. We had confirmed with the ranger that the trail was below the snow line. Our earlier jaunt to check out Narada Falls prompted us to ask. That trail was rather slippery with slushy and somewhat icy snow.

On our way back to base, we noted the volcano evacuation route signs. That was a first for us.
